About Us
ALTAR was born from a shift in how I understood care.
Living rurally in New Mexico, with limited access to products that worked for my increasingly sensitive skin, I began making my own. What started as necessity became a deeper practice of paying attention to what my skin needed, to how my body was changing, and to what it meant to care for myself without the pressure to fix something that was never broken - my appearance, my skin.
After navigating illness, fertility, and a period of losing trust in my body, I became more aware of everything I was taking in through food, environment, and what I placed on my skin. My body required gentleness, and my approach to care began to change with it.
As my skin changed, becoming more reactive and discerning from age, hormones and environmental factors, I found that what it responded to was not intensity, but support. Formulations that softened, hydrated, and brought it back into balance, leaving it brighter, more supple, and radiant.
At the same time, as a mother raising daughters and a son who are watching closely, and as my eldest begins to form her own relationship with skincare, I am deeply aware of what I am modeling, not just in the ingredients I choose, but in the way I speak about my skin and how I move through my own experience with time and aging.
I don’t want to pass down a narrative of correction or inadequacy.
I want to model care rooted in respect, safety, and trust.
What felt missing in the world of skincare was not just clean ingredients, but a different orientation entirely.
Not products that promise to fix.
But products that support, replenish, and restore.
Not urgency. But ritual.
Not perfection. But presence.
ALTAR grew from that place.
Through touch and scent, I found my way back into my body. What once felt indulgent revealed itself as essential: small, repeated acts of care that softened my skin, improved its resilience, and rebuilt a sense of safety within it.
Each formulation is created slowly, in small batches, using botanical ingredients chosen for their ability to nourish, hydrate, and support the skin barrier, leaving the skin feeling supple, balanced, and visibly more alive.
But beyond function, these oils are meant to be experienced, to be warmed between the hands, pressed into the skin, inhaled.
A moment of contact. A way of returning to yourself before meeting the world.
In a culture that often asks us to resist aging, refine ourselves, and correct what is natural, ALTAR offers something much more delicious:
Care as devotion.
Ritual as a way of remembering.
Skin not as a problem, but as a place we live.
ALTAR is for those who no longer wish to wage war against themselves, but to feel held, softened, and at home in their skin while still experiencing real, visible nourishment and support.
Each bottle is made in the high desert of New Mexico, in rhythm with a life that has learned not to rush what matters.
With heart,
Elizabeth
